Gonadorelin is a synthetic version of a natural hormone called gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). Just like GnRH, Gonadorelin works by signaling the pituitary gland in the brain to release two key hormones: luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). These hormones are vital for growth and development in children and for fertility in adults. When Gonadorelin binds to this receptor, it triggers the release of LH and FSH, which then play a role in maturing sperm and eggs, as well as in producing sex hormones in the gonads (ovaries and testes).
This receptor, part of a larger family known as G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs), also influences cell growth and proliferation. It’s found not only in the pituitary gland but also in various reproductive organs and certain types of tumors, including some breast, prostate, and ovarian cancers. Because of this, Gonadorelin and similar substances are being explored for their potential in treating reproductive dysfunctions and certain hormone-sensitive cancers. They might even inhibit growth in some cancers that don’t depend on hormones.
